Aliens vs Predator 3 (AvP3) has the worst designed dedicated server ever.

HostedGameServers.com has been keeping up with the AvP3 times.  We’ve been putting out game server pre-orders and updates on dedicated server files for awhile.  We planed to host AvP3 and took a good number of preorders.

To make a long story short, the AvP3 dedicated server system is more than annoying like Battlefield 2 or the Unreal engine, it just plain does not work.  If you’ll notice, there are no GSPs who actually have AvP3 servers yet.  You may think that this is just because the game is new, but it’s not.  GSPs fight to get the newest games out there first to get both SEO and pre-orders.

The simple fact is that the AvP dedicated server exe REQUIRES a user environment.  This means you literally have to be logged into remote desktop on a Windows machine to make it work.  It’s the most obnoxious requirement for any software thats supposed to run en’ masse ever.  Beyond that, you can’t enforce anything via the command line.

For example, lets say I wanted a set number of slots as maximum… you can’t pass that as a command line argument and lock down a server.  You have to literally open a config file and put it in there.  The same config file that customers can use.

ASIDE from getting work arounds for having a user environment and not getting auto-generating configs that you cant’ enforce slots and public/private availability on… there’s more.  Steam has to be running and logged in, which means you actually have to remote desktop into the server to enable a steam logon.  Then you have to leave the session running open so it stays on.

Even further, the game console that pops up is difficult to shut down remotely because it spawns a new process.

The game also requires 15GB of data to host a server, which is just annoying.

We’ve tried everything from rigging up a Windows server to have an SSH session with the ability to run things in a screen to deploying every windows control panel we could get our hands on.  Theres just no way to integrate this crap game server into any control panel out there.  From the looks of the way the system is developed, they don’t plan on changing it either.

So unless you want to have your dedicated server up on remote desktop 24/7 while logged into it’s own unique steam account… give up.

We’re sorry, but until AvP3 does a complete overhaul and makes it possible to integrate their game into some kind of control panel, we can’t host it… it’s just not possible.

So, theres the reason nobody has AvP game servers guys, sorry.

We’re trying to get AvP3 integrated and running!

We’ve got the east coast hardware for Aliens vs Predator 3 ready and running, but we’re having a hell of a time finding a CP that supports it.  The dedicated server support is very poor and it’s definitely beta.  We’ve tried www.gamecp.com to no avail and the swiftpanel system we already have just supports linux.  I tried some cygwin hackery to get that to integrate, but no luck there.

The AvP3 game files are also 15 gigabytes which means all the servers need to run off a core set of files.  The game panel we choose has to support that, too.

We have an order in for www.tcadmin.com so as soon as that pulls through we’re going to get it up and running.

If you know any control panels that may be compatible with avp3, please give support a contact!

We know!

We’re waiting on our Windows boxes to come in.  We had to wait until the files were released so we knew what kind of hardware to purchase!
It all depends on the data centers putting in our boxes now.  It takes anywhere from 24 to 48 hours which means we should have our servers up by tomorrow night!

AvP3 Servers Ordered!

As you know we have been an all Linux hosted provider since our creation.  However, with AvP we’re changing things.  We knew this could happen!

AvP3 is a Windows hosted game, so we have a couple orders for a Central USA and East Coast USA servers up right now.  As soon as the servers are up we’ll be setting them up and handing out your servers!

Our East Coast provider is a little faster at setups than the Central one, so we’re thinking East Coast providers will have availability first.

If you haven’t ordered AvP3 yet, get your game server here!

More Aliens vs Predator Dedicated Game Server Information Coming Tomorrow

You all know we’ve been waiting and watching for the AvP 3 dedicated game server files to be released for our pre-order customers.  Supposedly, more information is being released TOMORROW involving just that.  Check out the recent forum post on the Steam forum:

“Further information regarding the dedicated servers closed beta will be announced on the 1st of March, as stated in “Patch 2 notes” thread which has been stickied in this forum.”
We’re keeping up on it!
If you still haven’t ordered your AvP 3 pre-order: Order your AVP 3 Pre-Order HERE.

AvP3 Preorder servers are coming ASAP!!!

According to this form post on the Steam forums, the AvP3 files are due out within the coming days.

It appears that SEGA has decided AvP3’s dedicated server is far less important than the actual game release.  Understandable, but really lame!  We’re watching and we’ll have our downloaded started just as soon as the files are released!

Still no AvP3 Files!!!!!!!!

We’re waiting… we’re watching… we’re contacting people.  Apparently the AvP3 team does not care enough to let GSPs prepare for customers by providing game server files before launch!  We’re going to get our hands on the files as soon as possible.  Stay tuned!

Atom Exploded. Boom.

Something on one of our servers caused atom’s memory go to nuts!  Likely a steam bug, exploit or memory leak… atom needed a hard reboot before it would be responsive.  If you had a server who already had memory assigned, you were probably playing normally… but when you would go to change maps – it wasn’t coming back!

We’re sorry and stuff :-(

Central Servers on the way!

We’ve had plenty enough customers sign up that we’ll be launching a central server operation (likely in Texas) between the 12th and the 18th of February.   Until then we will be scouting to find the best connectivity, availability and location to plant down our central USA servers.

Right now, the only game server hosting available for order in central USA is AvP3… because it isn’t out yet!

Valve broke source again. Don’t update!! (appdatacache.cpp (311) : Assertion Failed: !”Implement me” error)

So, valve broke Counter-Strike: Source again in their last update.  (Sigh!)  Don’t update your server or it will stop booting.  They’re working on a fix now, but it could be a day.  Bad Valve, BAD!
